What College Area Residents Need to Know about their Community Plan Update

Updated: May 15, 2022

By Neighbors For A Better San Diego

What College Area Residents Need to Know In an effort to bring awareness and transparency to the closed process by which the Planning Department, at the direction of Mayor Gloria, is proposing to radically upzone College Area neighborhoods, Neighbors For A Better San Diego has created this short, ten-minute video outlining the College Area Community Plan Update.

Although this video is specific to the College Area, Neighbors For A Better San Diego feels it's important for other communities to be made aware of this process to be better prepared for future community plan updates.

The video explains how the Planning Department disregarded the community’s previous planning work and instead produced two flawed plans that fail to consider the latest SANDAG population and housing projections, the topography and dynamics of College Area neighborhoods, and the realistic economic development options for the community. Rather than revise its plans based on initial community feedback, the Planning Department has reinforced its flawed concepts with a skewed community survey, which they will use to claim that they solicited community input and can proceed with environmental impact studies. (Once the environmental impact review starts, the Planning Department will claim that they can’t make any significant changes.) We urge all College Area residents to watch this video and register for the May 25th Planning Department Zoom meeting. Instructions for the meeting registration can be found below as well as on the YouTube page. Please share with your College Area contacts.

  • Insist the Planning Department delay the Environmental Impact Review (EIR) until plan options are developed with input and consideration of College Area residents and Series 14 forecasts

  • Stand together to support the College Area Plan Update Committee’s “7 Visions” report which meets the community’s future housing needs by adding density along the community’s major corridors and three main intersections (nodes) AND protects the integrity of the community’s single-family neighborhoods.
